2. Words

Words are the fuel of language. The number of words you are familiar with determines your language abilities. The more words you know, the better you are:

When you were 2 to 18 years old, you added to your brain dictionary on average 10 new words per day, one word every 90 minutes. Later, at work or at university, you enriched your vocabulary with thousands of technical words. As an adult, you know more than 50,000 words of your native language .

To be comfortable in another language you need roughly half that amount, i.e., 25,000 words. Fortunately, about 40% of these are variants of other words and can be easily inferred. A good estimate of truly unique words you have to learn is therefore 15,000 words.
